Foods Which Fuel Your Brainpower

We are what we eat, or so they say. Did you also know that eating well not only benefits your body, but also your brain? Our mind is in constant need of nutrients which allow it to function at its peak and ward off stress at key times of the day.

You see in times of stress, our bodies release inflammatory ‘cytokines’. These chemicals force our immune system to fight the stress through inflammation, as if the stress was an infection. While inflammation helps protect us against illnesses and repairs the body when you do something like cut yourself, chronic inflammation derived from stress can have mounting negative effects on your body and brain.

When we speak about ‘brain foods’, we usually refer to foods which are rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, minerals and vitamins. The long term consumption may also aid in protecting against brain diseases. When we focus on giving our bodies anti-inflammatory, nutritious foods which benefit our bodies, we’re also benefiting our brains. So read below for a list of whole, nutritious foods which may aid your brainpower.

Olive & Coconut Oil

Coconut oil may enhance the brain’s ability to use energy, whilst reducing the production of damaging free radicals at the same time. Coconut oil is also a rich source of saturated fat, a nutrient essential for the integrity and function of brain cell membranes. On the other side, Olive oils are rich in polyphenols, which act as powerful brain-protecting antioxidants.

Wild Salmon

Not only a delicious dish, wild caught salmon is a potent natural source of the omega-3 oil, DHA. DHA plays an important role in maintaining brain cell health and can help stimulate the growth of brain cells in the memory centre.

Walnuts & Almonds

Walnuts are rich in many nutrients which support brain health including vitamin E, omega-3 fats, fibre and copper, which are all beneficial for brain supportive gut bacteria. Like fatty fish, Almonds include high levels of brain-friendly Omega-3 fatty acids and lots of brain-protecting vitamin E.

Eggs

The humble egg is a rich source of choline, the precursor chemical for acetylcholine, one of the most fundamental neurotransmitters. Choline is also one of the ingredients in the productivity-boosting Lucid Smart Pill. Additionally, eggs contain healthy amounts of cholesterol, which is a key component of brain cell membranes, along with serving as a brain-protective antioxidant.

Vitamin B Supplements

B vitamins such B6, B12 and folic acid can reduce levels of homocysteine in the blood. Elevated levels of homocysteine are related to increased cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. If you can’t source Vitamin B rich foods such as chicken, fish, eggs and leafy greens, pick up some daily Vitamin B supplements for a fraction of the price.

Blueberries & Avocados

Blueberries are loaded with brain-protective antioxidants. They also help to reduce inflammation, a cornerstone of all brain degenerative disorders. Avocados are as beneficial as blueberries in promoting brain health as they are high in monounsaturated fats which protect brain cells. They can also help lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation.
