Focus Hacks: When Nothing Else Cuts It

When you need to perform you have to perform, and that usually means you need to focus. From experience I’ve personally found one of the keys to success is being able to focus (and get motivated) with no external influence or motivation. Whether you’re a business owner, CEO, student, or employee; if you focus and GSD (get shit done) you will have a lot higher chance of success (of course focusing and working on the right objectives are just as important as actually GSD).

14 years ago I came to the realisation that I only had 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, and 365 days in a year – and the only way to complete more and reach my goals was to improve my mental performance, motivation, and focus. This was the start of journey, a continual iterative process of finding what sustainable focus hacks work for me, which even now, after 14 years, I’m still learning more and improving.

I’ve compiled a list of focus hacks that I’ve found over years of consistent use continue to be effective and do not have negative side effects.

Power Nap

There are just some times when I’m so tired, most other focus hacks would be an uphill battle. When this happens I know it’s time for a power nap. The key with a power nap is to make sure you don’t sleep for more than 20 minutes – any longer than this and you are likely to wake up more tired than you did before you went to sleep. (Note: If you really need longer than 20 minutes, then go for a 3-4 hour sleep, this works with your circadian rhythm. If you sleep longer than 20 minutes you could wake up when you are an in a deep sleep and you will feel a lot sleepier. aka. Sleep Inertia) After a power nap I wake up extremely awake and alert, and ready for work.

My hack involves setting my alarm for 23 minutes, and then taking long slow breaths in and out and focusing on my breathing to get to sleep within 3-10 minutes.  When my alarm goes off, I get up immediately, no snoozing – that will only reverse the effects of the nap!

Power naps as short as 6 minutes have been proven to restore wakefulness and promote performance and learning.

Cold Shower

This is one I’ve started more recently, I have a cold shower every morning as part of my routine.  It snaps me into action for the day, and I start the day fresh, awake, and alert. This hack can be used when you’re feeling sluggish and need that extra kick.

Some of the benefits of having a cold shower include improved alertness, circulation, mood, immune strength, testosterone levels (that’s a benefit to both men and women, including helping your sex life), increased metabolism, and better breathing.

Focus Sprint

Remove all distractions (turn off/close your email, turn your phone into flight mode and remove from sight, put on headphones/ensure no external interruptions, close all other applications on your computer, etc), chose one objective to complete, and set a timer for 25 minutes. Only work on that one task for 25 minutes and nothing else.  Once the 25 minutes is up, stop working and set the timer for another 5 minutes.  During the 5 minutes “break” you can do anything you like, this is free time!  Once the 5 minutes is up, start the timer for 25 minutes again and repeat.

Repeat this anywhere from 2-5 times, you will be surprised at what you can get done in these short sprints! The key to success it ensure you focus on one objective (or sequentially go through several smaller tasks), don’t get distracted, and don’t switch between tasks. This can take a little getting used to, but once you practice you can easily nail it and your productivity should sky rocket!

You may already know this method, it’s also known as the pomodoro technique.

Water

Water starts getting absorbed to your brain immediately after taking a sip, the impact is very noticeable and I will always have a glass/bottle of water I drink throughout the day. An optimal amount of water is at 2-3 litres per day.

Your brain is 85% water, and it gives your brain the electrical energy for all brain functions. “When your brain is functioning on a full reserve of water, you will be able to think faster, be more focused, and experience greater clarity and creativity.”

Strong Mints (Sugar Free)

My mint of choice is Eclipse Peppermint Sugarfree or if I can get my hands on them Fisherman’s Friend Extra Strong (Sugarfree).  Strong Mints clear my mind, wake up my brain, and clear my sinuses – which in simple terms means a great focus hit!  I’m not a fan of sugar-filled mints, processed sugars are unhealthy for you and offer no nutritional value. Plus I don’t like the furry sugar feeling on my teeth!

Fisherman’s Friend original formula has been around for over 150 years, originally concocted by a pharmacist for coughs, but now more widely used a pick me up.
